How to create that soft vintage T-shirt feel

Many of us probably have that one T-shirt in our collection that is old, maybe has a stain or two, and possibly a hole, tear or rip, and most likely faded.  But, its so soft.  You can't throw it away.  I used to have lots of those, until my mom took them away one day and reappeared with an ultra-cool T-shirt quilt.  Keeps me warm with on the chilly winter nights.

But, back to T-shirt softness.  There is a way to achieve that old vintage feel without washing it 20+ times.  Its called brining.  Much like you'd do for the turkey meal, you can also brine your T-shirts.  All it takes is a new T-shirt, or one that you want to have softened, water and some salt.

Directions:

  • Mix 1 quart of water with 1/2 cup of common table salt until salt is dissolved.
  • Put the T-shirt into the mixture and make sure its fully soaked and submerged.
  • Let the T-shirt soak for three days.  Note: you should stir the water and shirt at least once a day.
  • Remove from the water / salt mixture and machine wash T-shirt with regular detergent.  Tumble dry.

Happy brining.
